Orthodontics: The Science Behind Straightening Teeth

Orthodontics: The Science Behind Straightening Teeth

Orthodontics is much more than improving the appearance of a smile. It focuses on diagnosing and correcting irregularities involving the teeth, jaws, and bite.

Traditional braces use brackets and wires to apply controlled forces to the teeth. Over time, these forces stimulate changes in the surrounding bone, allowing teeth to gradually move into their planned positions.

Clear aligners use the same biological principle but achieve movement through a series of customised removable trays.

Orthodontic treatment can correct conditions such as crowding, spacing, overbite, underbite, and crossbite. Proper tooth alignment can also make oral hygiene easier and improve chewing efficiency.

Before starting treatment, orthodontists evaluate dental models, photographs, radiographs, facial proportions, and jaw relationships.

For dental students, orthodontics provides a strong example of how anatomy, growth and development, biomechanics, and clinical planning work together.
