Root Canal Treatment: Saving an Infected Tooth

Root Canal Treatment: Saving an Infected Tooth

When dental decay or trauma reaches the pulp inside a tooth, bacteria can cause inflammation or infection. This may lead to pain, sensitivity, swelling, or even the formation of a dental abscess.

Root canal treatment is designed to remove the infected or damaged pulp while preserving the natural tooth. During treatment, the dentist creates an opening in the tooth, cleans and shapes the root canals, disinfects them, and fills the space with a suitable material.

After the root canal procedure, the tooth usually requires a permanent restoration such as a filling or crown to restore its strength and function.

Modern endodontic techniques, rotary instruments, digital imaging, and improved anaesthesia have made root canal therapy more predictable and comfortable.

Understanding endodontics helps dental students appreciate how detailed knowledge of root anatomy, microbiology, radiology, and restorative dentistry comes together during clinical treatment.
